| New Passenger Complex to Handle Growing Airport
Needs By Cameo Garrett Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is definitely worthy of its title as the 'world's busiest airport'. With an estimated 86 million passengers traveling through Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in 2005 and another 115 million passengers forecasted for 2015, increased air travel demand will certainly take its toll on the Airport's infrastructure and the traveler's experience. Airport officials have determined that Hartsfield-Jackson will need a new facility with additional domestic gates, ticketing and baggage claim areas to manage the increased passenger flow by 2011. To meet the forecasted demand, the Department of Aviation has plans to construct an additional passenger terminal to be located south of the existing airfield. The planned facility will boost up to 70 additional aircraft gates and will have a direct connection to the expanded main terminal via an automated people mover system. Currently, the Department is undergoing an intensive planning effort to define the scope and configuration of the proposed complex. The addition of the domestic South Gate Complex will require an extensive reconstruction of the existing terminal roadway access system and then roadway extension south of Interstate 285. When the new complex is complete, passengers will experience less congestion and more efficiency as they travel through Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. "The passenger will benefit from state of the art facilities and a continued wide choice of flights because we will have the additional gates necessary to handle more aircraft," said Tom Nissalke, Director of Environment and Technical Services. Current cost estimates for the South Gate Complex are$1.8 billion. © 2005 Hartsfield-Jackson News. A Publication from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. All rights reserved. |
